What is veganism?
A vegan is someone who abstains from eating anything coming from animals. Some vegans protest against using any products whatsoever that involve animals, such as leather, wool or even candles.
Diet-wise vegans stay away mainly from meat, poultry, seafood, dairy and in extreme cases even eggs and honey.
The difference between Vegan and Vegetarian
Vegetarians don't eat animals but they still use products coming from them.
There are 4 main categories concerning their diet:
1. Lacto-ovo-vegetarian
-No: meat or fish
-Yes: Dairy products and eggs
2. Ovo-vegetarian
-No: Meat, fish, or dairy products
-Yes: Eggs
3. Lacto-vegetarian
-No: Meat, fish or eggs
-Yes: Dairy products
4. Pescatarian
-No: Meat
but they do eat fish and other seafood.
Some may say that the Pescatarian is not the most original diet and people consider it to be a semi-vegetarian diet because of the contents that are considered to be consumable.
Which is healthier: Vegetarian or Vegan?
Both lifestyles will impact your health but there are no way of knowing for sure which is better. There are many different sub-diets from these two main groups which you could choose from. It all depends on what your individual needs are, and what your body is asking for. Walter Willet (M.D. from the nutrition department from Harvard Health) said
"-It's a matter of nutritional balance," which is well said.
